Merle Haggard – the music, the man

When I got the news today I was so heartsick…
It’s hard to believe that Merle Haggard is no longer with us. He was a huge influence on me as a young girl. In fact, one of the first songs I learned how to play on the guitar was a Merle song – “Branded Man.”
Several years back I was honored to open for him for two nights at The Birchmere, in Alexandria, VA, and I got to spend a little time with him.
At sound check the first day I told him that I would be singing some blues songs and asked if that was okay. He said, “That’s great! I was singing the blues before I ever got into country music.”
He was such a joy to work with and his music will always be a part of me.
And as hard as it is for artists like me to deal with the loss, I can’t imagine what his family is going through.
My heart goes out to each of them, and I’ll be lifting them up in prayer…

About EGKight

I've made music most of my life, and I enjoy every aspect of it. I'm a roots singer, songwriter, entertainer, publisher, and producer. My musical style has been called “country-flavored southern-fried blues.” I've headlined at clubs, theaters and festivals across America and in Europe. And my songs have been recorded by artists across the genres. Even my mentor, Koko Taylor, recorded a couple of my songs, and they landed on her last two Grammy nominated albums. I've had songs on five major TV networks, and I placed five songs in a movie that's available on Amazon Prime. I love songwriting, and I love performing, and I love to see all my fans at my shows. I'll see you out there on the road!
