Goats, songs, gas pumps, Mama, Chattanooga, and Canada!

I’ve been working on so many different projects that I can hardly keep up with myself!

Of course, my pet goats get a lot of my attention every day when I’m at home.
Here’s me holding Moses, a truly precious goat.

And I’m still working on a couple of new songs, and getting set lists ready for some upcoming shows. I love being home, and I love being on the road, seeing all of you!

I’m getting ready to head out again next week to the Chattanooga area for three shows. Two of them are private, but you can come see me at the House Concert next Wednesday! Get all the details on my TOUR DATES page. Email the host to RSVP and make plans to come see me!

On August 25th my band and I will board a big jet plane, and head north to Canada for the Edmonton Blues Festival! It’s been a long time since I’ve been up there, and I’m sure looking forward to seeing Cam Hayden, and all my friends up there. They’ve got a fabulous lineup, including Victor Wainwright, Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne, Colin Linden Trio, Toni Lynn Washington, Mike Ledbetter, Monster Mike Welch, and so many more amazing artists. If you don’t have tickets yet, ya better get ya some!

A couple of weeks ago, I was with my band at Bradfordville Blues Club in Tallahassee. We always have a great time there, and our friends out in radio land and online get to listen to the first set. That’s the next best thing to being there! Here’s a photo that Gary Anton took of all of us on stage. We were having a naturally LARJ time!

We always look forward to our shows there, and we’ll be back in January, to celebrate a couple of birthdays – Gary Anton’s and mine! Make plans now to be part of the celebration!

Last weekend I did a solo show at one of my favorite cafes, up in the north Georgia mountains – The Crimson Moon Cafe in Dahlonega.

It was great to see so many friends and family, who drove from all over the state to see me! And it’s always good to have my mama with me. Here’s a picture that Elizabeth Adams took of us. I got Mama up to sing a song with me, and everyone seemed to love it. And I love my mama! Can you tell?!?

On our way back home from Dahlonega, we headed over to one of my regular stops along the way – Murrayville. This is where I’ve gotten so many of my favorite photos over the last few years. This time, I got a couple more. See what you think.

You can see more of them on my PHOTOGRAPHY page at the link above.

I’ve got a lot to finish up before I drive up to Chattanooga next week. But I’ll be lookin’ for ya on the road!

Till then, Keep a Song in Your Heart!

I’ve been everywhere, man! I’ve been everywhere!

Hello Everybody!

Have I been busy lately! I’ve been traveling around the country, having a great time doing what I love – writing and playing music!

My band and I were in Montgomery, Alabama on Sunday at the Capitol Oyster Bar. It’s been quite a while since we were there and we enjoyed getting to see our friends and fans in the area. And Memphis Billy was along for the ride.

A few months ago I performed with an old friend Becky Hobbs and a new friend, Lucy Billings, at the Renaissance Theatre in Kingsport, Tennessee. We played an “in the round” songwriters night. It’s always inspiring to hear other writers songs. An “in the round” concert is when artists take turns performing their songs. I’ve always enjoyed this type of concert and I think it’s interesting for the audience to find out the thought process behind the songs. It lets them know where your ideas come from, and how a song develops.

Lucy, EG, Becky - Kingsport(LtoR: Lucy Billings, me, Becky Hobbs)

And at the end of July, I helped launch the Explore Georgia Songwriter Series at the Carnegie Library in my hometown of Dublin, Georgia! This was the first in a series of events, and I was honored to be part of the first one. Joining me was Levi Lowrey and Greg Hester. These two guys are successful writers, and I really enjoyed hearing their music, and getting to know them a little bit. Levi ended up jammin’ with me on the fiddle and we had a ball! I hope we can all work together again!

The night before that I was in Sheffield, Alabama at George’s, a beautiful venue with great sound. Thanks to Debbie Dixon and all those who came out to get their fill of the blues!

And while we’re talking about songwriters, I spend some time in Nashville again, writing with Johnny Neel and Doug Jones, and we came up with some keepers! Johnny and I, and Joanna Cotten wrote a song that’s on Shaun Murphy‘s new album. I was honored to have another song on her album, too. I hope by now you’ve heard her CD. It’s a real true blues release and Shaun really belts it out. Check it out when you can!

Recenty I also performed in another songwriters round at the Allman Brother’s Big House in Macon, Georgia with Sonny Moorman and Russell Gulley. I’d heard about them for a long time, and really enjoyed being with them. Thanks to Michael “Buffalo” Smith for letting me be a part of it.

EG, Toney Gulley, Sonny Moorman by Rick Cash(LtoR: Toney Gulley, Sonny Moorman, and me. Photo by Rick Cash.)

In mid-July I did a mini-tour in Ohio and Indiana. I performed again at one of my fave places, the Hey Hey Club in Columbus, then I did a house concert in Westerville, Ohio at the Hoover House Concert series. It was outdoors, on a lovely night, and Nancy and Roy were precious hosts. It was a magical night!

EG on stage Hoover House 071616

The next night I helped kick off the new Indy Blues Society at an event at Wolfie’s in Noblesville, Indiana. It’s a good thing to see folks have such a passion for this great music and who are willing to start a society to help keep the blues going. Marcia and Mark Adams are dedicated to growing this blues society, and I know they will. So many good things can come from being associated with the Blues Foundation. I’m just proud to be a part of it.

EG on stage Indy Blues rsz
I’m getting ready to head up to Ohio for the Cincy Blues Festival, and I’m really looking forward to seeing a lot of friends up there. Lots of my friends are performing on the same stage! After my set, Gaye Adegbalola will do a solo set, then Andra Faye and Scott Ballentine do a set. Then Gaye will join Andra for a “Saffire Reunion” with Cheryl Renee sitting in. This will be their first reunion since Saffire – the Uppity Blues Women retired. And even though Ann Rabson won’t be there physically, I know she’ll be there in spirit. I love performing, and I love sitting back watching my friends perform, too. I can’t wait!

Blues Fest logo 2015_6_4

After the festival, I’ll be flying to Wyoming to have a whole week of learning more about my camera, taking photos, taking in the fresh air, and just being blessed by the beautiful surroundings. This trip has been on my “bucket list” for a long time. Hopefully I’ll come back with some new exciting photos.

In the next couple of months I’ll be in Chattanooga, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and Nashville.  When I’m home in between shows, I’m working on a new project that I hope will be ready in the next few months. I’ll let you know when it’s ready to show everybody.

Keep an eye on my schedule and I’ll see you somewhere along the way! Until then, keep a song in your heart!

Nashville! Nashville! Nashville!

Well, this Songbird sure has had a lot going on the last couple of weeks! I’ve been in Chattanooga and Nashville, and what a great time I’ve been having!

I was in Chattanooga the last weekend of February, and performed at a couple of house concerts. They were well attended and were so much fun! I just love it when I can get that that up close and personal with my fans. It’s like a mini-concert with fans who listen to and appreciate every word and every note. Thanks to Karen, and Gail and Al, for hosting these concerts!

I’ve been in Nashville this whole past week and got to catch up with so many wonderful artists. I saw some old friends and made some new ones.

Tuesday I went to 3rd & Lindsley to hear Post Monroe, an amazing country trio with beautiful harmonies.

Post Monroe at 3rd & Lindsley
We left there and went to see Jennie Hoeft and the Jenerators at Sambuca, a nice, cozy dinner club. Jennie is one of my all-time favorite drummers, and she had five-time Grammy winner Victor Wooten on bass. They were playing some of the good old R&B songs that we all know and love, and I really enjoyed that blast from the past.

Jen Hoeft at Sambuca
We left there, and went to Bourbon Street to hear Gary Nicholson, (as Whitey Johnson), who is not only one of the best songwriters out there, but he’s also a great performer. Playing guitar with him was someone I’ve wanted to meet for a long time, Colin Linden. He’s the Music Director for the ABC show “Nashville” and has studied under none other than Howlin’ Wolf. So Colin and I had a mutual friend, Hubert Sumlin, Howlin’s Wolf’s guitar player, who continues to inspire both of us.

Gary Nicholson, Colin Linden, Dana Robbins BSBBB

In one evening, I heard straight-ahead country, R&B, and blues. That’s one reason I love Nashville!

Wednesday afternoon I had a conference call with Dr. Arun Venkatesan, the Director of Neurology at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, about when I was sick with Encephalitis. We had an uplifting conversation and he talked about me becoming one of the “Faces” of Encephalitis research. I’m looking forward to taking a tour of the Encephalitis Center, and performing a concert there. I’m glad to be part of the research and to help raise awareness about Encephalitis.  Stay tuned….

And to see my photo that landed in 3rd place in two categories in the Encephalitis Society‘s #ShowYouKnow contest, click here. http://www.EGKightMusic.com/encephalitis

Wednesday evening I joined some old and dear friends, JC Ward and Diane Gentes, in Debi Champion‘s songwriters round at the Commodore Grille. It was a fundraiser for the Cheatham County Animal Awareness Foundation, and we helped raise $3,500 for the animals. You know that did my heart good!

Friday night Colin had a show at the City Winery and invited some of the “Nashville” cast to join him.  I’m a huge fan of the show, so I was beside myself, and it was a very memorable evening.

Then we went back to Bourbon Street, and I got to sit in with Stacy Mitchhart and his band again. They are one of the best blues bands I’ve ever heard, and it’s always an honor to be invited to sit in with them! My friend Barb Hilke from the Atlanta Blues Society happened to be there, too, so we were representing Georgia in the house!

EG with Stacy Mitchhart 030416 rsz
I’ve been writing some new songs and can’t wait to try them out for you. And, I’m excited that the movie, “Collar” that has five of my songs in it, is supposed to be coming out soon. I can’t wait to see it and can’t wait for you to see it, too.  I’ll keep you posted on that!

And for all of you who’ve been asking about my goats, they’re all doing good right now. And a couple of weeks ago, I brought Cotton Top in the house so she could listen to me practice one of my new songs. I think she liked it!

My schedule is constantly changing, so please keep an eye on it.  I hope to see you soon.  Until then, keep a song in your heart!

“15 Best Albums” list, New Year’s Eve party, free download, CD sale, songs in a new movie!

Hello Everyone!

I hope you’re all getting into the Christmas spirit! “Kindness” is the word for the season. If things seem overwhelming, just smile. I don’t think the good Lord intended for us to get stressed around his birthday. Let’s just slow down and breathe, and remember that a smile goes a long way, and sometimes that’s all someone needs.

I just got the latest issue of Kudzoo magazine, and it made me smile from ear to ear! Not only was my “A New Day” album reviewed in it, but it also made the “15 Best Albums that made 2015 memorable” list! How awesome is that?!? You can read all about it here. http://www.kudzoomag.com

I’ve been one busy Songbird the last half of this year. I’ve traveled to South Carolina, Ohio, Florida, Connecticut, Kentucky, California, Tennessee, Indiana, Alabama, Pennsylvania, and back to Georgia, performing in a park, on a porch, at a festival, on the street, in a listening room, at house concerts, at an apple orchard, in a chapel, in clubs, and a theater. I love pickin’ and grinnin’ and I’ll make music anywhere!

It’s been great catching up with old friends and making new ones. That’s one of the perks of the music business.  I’ve been so blessed to meet so many wonderful people through the years playing my music, and some end up becoming dear friends.

I do a lot of solo shows, but I’m always thrilled to get to share the stage with the amazingly talented members of my Blue South Band. We performed a short set together at the Skydog 69 annual benefit concert honoring the legacy of Duane Allman. It’s always held around his birthday and the admission is cans of food which go to the Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia. I was so honored to be part of it, and it was great being with my band!

I also shared the stage with the young guys of the Dirty Uncle Bob band at GABBAfest, the Georgia Allman Brothers Band Association’s annual event. It’s great to see these young players appreciating great music! Here’s a video of us doing “Southbound.”

A couple of months ago I got a request for some of my songs for an upcoming movie starring Rebecca DeMornay, Tom Sizemore, Richard Roundtree, and David Patrick Wilson! And they selected five of them, including a couple that I co-wrote with Tom Horner! I’ll keep you posted as things develop!

In November I had four baby goats born. One of them, “Jazz” was shunned by his mama, but he now has a wonderful new home, and is at a goat “palace.”  He’s being pampered so much that I’m thinking we should call him “Prince Jazz.”  The other new babies are Cotton Top, Honey Boy, and Buttercup. They’re so cute, and they’re such great stress relievers. Everyone should have a pet goat! You can see all the latest pictures of my babies on the GOAT REPORT page. Here’s one of Buttercup curled up in a feed bowl.

I’m getting geared up for the holidays, and looking back over an amazing year. I’ve been a lot of places, and done a lot of things. And I’m excited to now be raising awareness for the Johns Hopkins Encephalitis Center. They are on the cutting edge of research and education, and my hope is that one day people like me will get the right diagnosis, and the best possible care, with no lingering effects. Read all about it on the ENCEPHALITIS page.

I’ll be performing on New Year’s Eve in Chattanooga at the Tropicana Room, and we’re gonna have a large time! Get your tickets on my Tour Dates page. Come on out and let’s bring in 2016 together!

We have some more upcoming dates in the works, and as soon as we can, we’ll post the on my site. So keep checking my schedule.  You never know when I might show up in your neck of the woods!

And one final thing… We’ve got a few of my older CD’s left in the warehouse, so we’ve got all of them on sale now through the end of January. I’ve got to clear some out to make room for a new one! I’ll be working on it in 2016, and I’m excited about another new venture. Get a free download of “Holdin’ On,” and get some CD’s for your collection, and to give to your friends at http://www.EGKightMusic.com/music!

Robert Johnson book now available, Blues Music Awards, and Birthday Bash!

Hello everyone!

It’s finally Spring, I mean sometimes… Sometimes during the day it’s winter, then summer, then spring.  Oh well, it is what it is and I’m just proud to be here.

I started the year with a wonderful birthday bash in January at the Bradfordville Blues Club, celebrating with Gary Anton, whose birthday is the same day. We had a sold out crowd and had a wang dang doodle of a time! And I was thrilled to see all the young people in the audience. The Blues is still alive and well in Tallahassee! I wound up getting 3 birthday cakes with all the trimmings, and we all had a blast!

In February I performed in Chattanooga, and my friend from Germany, Norbert Fuhrmann, stopped in. He was in the states on business, and I’m so glad he had time to come by and sit in with me! It’s always good to connect with friends from all over the world.

Norbert Fuhrmann with EG Kight Tropicana

From there I went on to Nashville to catch up with some old friends, make new ones, and get a new year of songwriting started! I’m hoping to spend more time in Nashville, meeting with industry folks, and writing and pitching my songs to some great artists there.

I enjoyed listening to Markey Blue and her band at Bourbon Street one night, and she invited me up to jam with her band. And I got to hear Stacy Mitchhart and his band the next night. I haven’t heard him in years, and he still puts on a great show! I ended up on stage with him, too, and he tore it up! I had a ball jammin’ with both of them.

I had forgotten how many amazing musicians there are in Nashville! I can’t wait to go back!

I’m getting into the songwriting mood and have started working on some new songs, and even though my latest album, A NEW DAY, is still getting quite a bit of airplay, it’s time to start thinking about songs for the next project. If you haven’t heard A NEW DAY yet, you can listen to some soundbytes and get the CD or downloads here. www.egkight.com/discography/day.html

There are some songs I really want you to hear that may help you, or someone you know, in some way. That’s what I intended when I wrote them – to lift people up. I hope it works!

I’m all geared up to go to Memphis in May with my Blue South Band for the Blues Music Awards. As most of you know, I’ve been nominated for the Koko Taylor Award. I feel like I’ve already won just having her name on the nomination and just knowing that the industry folks thought enough of me to include me on the list of nominations. May can’t get here soon enough. I can’t wait to see everybody!

I’ve been taking some new photos and I’ll be posting them soon. “Preaching Blues,” the book about Robert Johnson that has my photograph on the cover is out now. The day I got my copy of the book in the mail from the author, James Nuttall, was an exciting day for this Songbird! You can order the ebook on AmazonEG holding Preaching Blues book Nuttall
If you want to see some of my newer photos, you can check out my photography site here. www.EGKightPhotography.com

I’ll be at the Capitol Oyster Bar in Montgomery with my Blue South Band this Sunday, then it’s on to the Tropicana Room in Chattanooga, then to the Crimson Moon in Dahlonega. Then we’re doing a festival, then I have some more Alabama dates. This summer we’ll be in Port RoyalSouth Carolina, and we’re working on some Arkansas and Oklahoma dates, and some more in Indiana and Michigan. And in the fall, I’m excited to be playing the 2 Left Feet Festival in Connecticut for the first time! I’m really looking forward to heading up there and seeing that part of the country!

We’re constantly working on more tour dates, so keep checking back. It’s changing all the time. Click on the “Tour Dates” tab above.

Thanks again for your support and especially for believing in me. I hope to see you soon.  Until then….. Keep a song in your heart!

I had a wonderful CD release party at the Cox Capitol Theatre in Macon, Georgia last Friday. The theatre was full and the folks connected, and gave us what we needed to put on our best show.  Thanks to my special guests, Diane Durrett, Paul Hornsby, and Gregg Brooks for adding so much to our show.  My band, The Blue South Band, was on their A game, and it was an exciting night!

A New Day is coming! A New Day is coming! And CD release parties are comin’ too!

Hey Everybody!

I’m so excited because I now have my new CDA NEW DAY – in my hot little hands! We’ve sent it out to radio, and the media are getting their copies as well. It will be released nationally on September 16th, and it’s already getting some great reviews!  You can read some of them under the REVIEWS tab above.

While I was in Nashville recently, I got to do something I’ve never done there before – sightseeing! I sure enjoyed soaking up so many areas of the city. And I took this photo from the pedestrian bridge. I sure love Nashville!

During that trip I also got to meet the artist who designed my last two album covers. I was thrilled to meet Cara Schneider, and she was just as genuinely sweet in person as she has been on the phone every time I’ve talked to her. Cara is the Art Director for the Nashville Opera, and she’s an incredibly inspiring designer. I’m so glad we got to visit and have some tea. Here’s a photo of us in her front yard.

EG and Cara Schneider 072414
I have some CD release parties coming up, and we’re gonna celebrate in a big way! We’ve confirmed one in Macon, GA on September 19th, one in Chattanooga, TN on October 4th and a couple in Ohio later on in October. Just keep an eye on my TOUR DATES, because we keep adding more!

My band and I tried some of the new songs out a few weeks ago in Tallahassee and they went over great.  The crowd seemed to love them. That sure makes a songwriter feel good. Our first set was live on the internet from Bradfordville Blues Club, and it was awesome!

And speaking of my band, we’ve FINALLY come up with the perfect name for these guys, who are like my brothers. They are now called the BLUE SOUTH BAND! We’ll be adding their photos and bios to my website, so you can know more about these amazingly talented players. I’d be lost without them, and I want you all to show ‘em some love the next time you see them! Check back soon to read their stories…

And while we were on stage at Bradfordville, we were being filmed to be part of a tourism video for Tallahassee. I think it turned out GREAT! See what you think. You’ll see us at the 2:13 markhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kguaD_P-Fts&list=UUDlZa0hPoPD3gjwRZrv9A6Q

You all know how I love to take pictures! I’ve taken some new ones recently, too, and I’ve updated my photography page.  Check it out at www.egkightphotography.com and let me know what you think.

I drove up to Hobart, IN near the end of July, and had the time of my life! It was a corporate event, for the owners of an oil company, and an apple orchard, among other businesses. I got to perform inside a huge barn, and the people I was entertaining were some of the sweetest people I’ve ever met! They even took me on a golf cart tour of the apple orchard, and I sure wish my mama could have been with me. She loves apples! I so enjoyed spending the afternoon with the Luke Oil folks, and I can’t thank them enough for their hospitality. I look forward to coming back your way one day soon. Thanks to Dana, and Tom, Sr., and Ryan, and everyone else who made this event such fun!

Another great BMA show, just finished up in the studio, my new camera, Billtown this weekend!

Hello Everybody!

I just wanted to catch you up on what’s been going on with the Songbird. I attended the Blues Music Awards in Memphis and as always, I had a natural ball. I got to be part of the VizzTone jam at the Rum Boogie on Beale, and talk about a good time! It was happening there!  I got to jam with Bob Margolin, using Little G Weavil‘s amazing guitar. It was an awesome evening!

And then the next night, it was the Blues Awards night, and what an outstanding show! I’ve made so many friends by attending the Blues Awards every year and it’s always like a family reunion when we all get together. I met up with my “Peach Pickin’ Mamas” partner, Lisa Biales, and she and I did some radio spots. We did a fun interview with Jesse Finkelstein for Blues Radio International. I’ll let you know when that show will air.

Lisa’s CD is doing great and I was happy to introduce her to some of my friends in the industry. Here I am at the BMA’s with some of my favorite people – Lisa Biales, Reba Russell, and Teeny Tucker.

I’ve been working hard on my upcoming album. My band helped with the arrangements on several of the songs and played their butts off in the studio. I’m so proud of the way they put so much of themselves into these songs. The creative juices were really flowing!

Here’s my band after a session in the studio – Paul Hornsby/engineer and producer, Gary Porter/drums, Mike Harrell/piano and organ, Ken Wynn/guitar, and Johnny Fountain/bass.  I love these guys!

And here’s Gary and his wife, Rhonda Porter. They helped me with background vocals, and she’s my soul sister!

It looks like the new CD, entitled “A New Day,” will be officially released in September. But I’ll have a few CD release parties prior to the national release. There will be one in Knoxville on July 18th, one in Chattanooga on July 19th, and another in Tallahassee on August 2nd. We’re working on several more, and we’re also in the process of booking some mini-tours in other states. I may be coming to your town, so just keep an eye on my schedule to see what’s going on. We’ll post the dates as soon as they’re contracted.

This coming Sunday, I’ll be performing at the Billtown Blues Festival in Hughesville, Pennsylvania. I’ll be joined on stage by my Northern Band, some great guys I used to play with some years back. I can’t wait to see them again, and all of my friends in Pennsylvania!

The goats are doing fine and I get such comfort from them when I get stressed. Here’s Sippie and me, enjoying a moment together.

I’ve also been enjoying my new camera. Here are a couple of photos I’ve taken lately. Can you tell I’m lovin’ it?!

Well, it’s back to work on the new CD. I need to get my part of the cover finished so we can wrap this baby up!

I hope to see you along the way. Until then, keep a song in your heart!

On the road again! And taking photos for Domestic Violence Prevention video!

Hey Everyone!

Last Saturday night I performed at a house concert for Mike and Marcia Adams, and let me tell you – we had an EXTRA larj time! I love doing house concerts because I’m literally just a few feet away from my audience. And what a great crowd this was! I was treated like a queen, and even had a few musicians sit in with me. The same thing happened a while back at Karen Claypool’s house concert. You never know what could happen at one of these events. It’s nothing but having a little party in your living room!

In between gigs, I’ve been doing a lot of songwriting, on some deep subjects. And one of them is a song that I started thinking about when I came home from the hospital a few years ago, after a life-threatening illness. It talks about how quickly our lives can change, and how we have to hold on…

My band has been working real hard with me on some new songs and we’ve been in the studio once already. They’re naturally tearing it up! We’ll be going back in real soon, and I can’t wait! I’m the luckiest singer on the planet, to get to work with Ken Wynn, Gary Porter, Johnny Fountain, and Mike Harrell. I’d put them up against any band out there!

I hope to see you all soon in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Marietta and Douglas, Georgia. I’m doing a solo and a couple of band shows, so you know I’ll be having a ball! I always enjoy being with my friends at the Tropicana Room in Chattanooga, and I haven’t been to Darwin’s in Marietta in a long time. It’ll be good to be back on their stage. And the boys and I are gonna let it fly at the Bikes, Blues & BBQ Festival in Douglas. Bring your friends and come on out to see us!

Last week I took photos of Kim Kight, my cousin who was the victim of domestic violence a few years ago. These pictures will be part of a video for the group Break the Silence against Domestic Violence, which should be seen nationally before long. Kim will be speaking, telling her story of survival, at an event in Atlanta on March 8th. Here’s a video that tells more about it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDqn9wErS9M&feature=youtu.be.

Thanks for checking in with me on my blog, and for always supporting my music and my photography.

I can’t wait for you to hear the new songs! I’ll keep you posted on how the new album’s coming along.

Here’s my latest photo of me and Sweetie, taken on Valentine’s Day.
