Letting the music speak for us… Fine Arts Center, and Tribute to BB King!

Sometimes words can’t express what we’re feeling, so we let the music speak for us. And in the last week, I’ve had so many emotions running through me, that words are hard to come by. So, I let the music do the talking…

Last Saturday my Blue South Band reminded me what real pros they are. We were the first band to take the stage at a brand new Fine Arts Center, and as the sound crew worked out the kinks, my band played right on through. They were exceptionally amazing, and I am so grateful for each and every one of them.

I want to thank Gary Steppe, Regina Hawkins, and all the great crew at the Union County Schools Fine Arts Center, for sharing their beautiful space, and for the fine hospitality! And I thank the Chamber of Commerce, and the community, who came out to share the evening with us. I look forward to coming back some time.

And on Tuesday the 22nd, I was part of a Tribute to BB King at the City Winery in Nashville. I was thrilled to be invited, since BB was such an influence on my music in my early years. And we were honored to have Claudette King, BB’s daughter with us!

This event ended up being one of the best nights of music I’ve ever heard in all the years I’ve been coming Nashville. Gina Hughes, with the Galaxie Agency, put together a lineup of stellar artists. And we blew the roof off the place!

I sang a song with Stacy Mitchhart’s amazing band, and then he and I did a duet of BB’s “Please Send Me Someone to Love.” See what you think…

And here’s the finale. We sure didn’t want the night to end!

BMA Koko Taylor Award nomination, Robert Johnson book, A New Day, Bradenton, and The Crimson Moon!

I hope you’re having a holly, jolly Christmas! Remember to be kind to one another and have patience. Try to enjoy each day and remember what we’re celebrating here, a birthday party for someone very special, Jesus.

My new CD “A New Day” is still getting quite a bit of airplay and lots of positive reviews. It’s what I call my “miracle album.” You can hear several of the songs, and read my story about it here. http://www.EGKightMusic.com/egs-story

And if you don’t have a copy yet, you can order it here. http://www.EGKightMusic.com/music And I’d be glad to autograph it for you. Just let me know how many you want, and who you want me to autograph it to!

I just found out last week that I’ve been nominated for another Blues Music Award – the Koko Taylor Award!  (formerly called the Traditional Blues Female award)  Now for anybody who knows me, you know that there isn’t an award out there that would mean more to me. After all, I wouldn’t be writing and singing the blues if it wasn’t for Koko. When I read the nominations, I had tears running down my face. It was a great start to this wonderful holiday season for me.

The award show will be held in Memphis on May 7th. In order to vote, you must be a member of the Blues Foundation. This is a wonderful organization that supports musicians, fans, musicians in need, and so many other things. If you’d like to be a part of it, you can join by clicking here. http://www.shopbluesfoundation.org/select-your-membership/

I got word this past weekend that the book about Robert Johnson that has my photograph as the cover will be available online soon. It’s called “Preaching Blues” by James Nuttall. I’ll let you know when it’s ready to purchase!

I’ve been busy traveling around doing what I love best, making music. My Blue South Band and I just played the Bradenton Blues Festival in Florida and did we ever have a large time! Lisa Biales sat in with us, too, and we had a ball! I love it when I’m surrounded by my friends on stage! I also did a “Blues In The Schools” program with a new friend, Dave Muskett. It was a rewarding experience and I hope the young people learned some things about the blues and music in general. There’s so much more to it than just performing.

A few weeks ago, I traveled once again to Valparaiso, Indiana and then on to Allegan, Michigan where I was joined on stage by Greg Nagy, who recorded a duet with me on my latest album. Here’s a video of us together at the Griswold Auditorium performing “When Something is Wrong with My Baby.”

Another friend, Ellen Altamore, joined me on stage at the Griswold too. She is a Sign Language Interpreter, and she signed to my song “Through the Eyes of a Child.” It was a heartwarming performance, and here’s a video of it.

It’s always fun to go to new places and meet up with old and new friends, and I can’t wait to head back up that way.

And just before that trip I was closer to home in Georgia, at Dalton State College, at Steve’s Live Music in Sandy Springs, and at Darwin’s in Marietta. I sure do enjoy my work, if you can call it that!

Tomorrow I’ll be playing my last show of the year at the Crimson Moon Café in Dahlonega, Georgia. I always try to play there during the Christmas season. They have the whole town square all dressed up in Christmas lights. It’s something to see! I hope to see you there!

I’ll be around home the rest of the year. Some of my goats are expecting babies and I need to be home for that. I’ll keep you up to date on the babies.

Again, I hope you enjoy your family, friends, pets, and music during this holiday season. We’re working on some dates for 2015, and we’ll post them as soon as they’re confirmed. I look forward to seeing you next year!

Until then, keep a song in your heart!

I’m so thankful!!

It’s almost Thanksgiving, and I want all of you to know how grateful I am to have you in my life.

Most of you know how important my new album, A NEW DAY, is to me. This album is one that I wasn’t sure I’d ever make, because of the life-threatening illness that took me down, just months before my 2011 release.

The first song I was able to write while recovering from meningitis and encephalitis is on A NEW DAY. “Holdin’ On” is my story, about hanging on, and not giving up.

We’ve all been through some tough times, and if we’d given up, we wouldn’t be where we are now. I’m so thankful to be alive, and I think the lyrics of that song tell it all….

If you don’t have the album yet, you can buy it as a CD at our special holiday rate, or as a download. http://www.EGKight.com/discography/discindex.html
All 8 cd covers Nov 2014

And share the link with your family and friends.

We all need a little encouragement sometimes, and I hope my music does that….

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Love,
EG

My new album is on the charts! Peach Pickin’ Mamas in Muncie, and Chattanooga CD release party!

Hello everybody!

I just wanted to post an update to let you know how my new album is doing. It came out last week and it landed at #1 on the Roots Music Report’s Top 50 for the state of Georgia! And now it’s #16 on the Top 50 Blues Album chart! And the song “Holdin’ On’” debuted at #32 on the Top 50 Blues Song chart! I can’t tell you how thrilled I am with the news!

And it’s getting lots of great reviews and quite a bit of airplay.  Thanks to all of you in radio who are helping to spread my music around, and to the media for helping get the word out!

I had a wonderful CD release party at the Cox Capitol Theatre in Macon, Georgia last Friday. The theatre was full and the folks connected, and gave us what we needed to put on our best show.  Thanks to my special guests, Diane Durrett, Paul Hornsby, and Gregg Brooks for adding so much to our show.  My band, The Blue South Band, was on their A game, and it was an exciting night!

Now, I’m on to Muncie, Indiana to meet up with Lisa Biales to perform our “Peach Pickin’ Mamas” show next Tuesday.  We always have a ball and laugh a lot. Lisa is such a sweetheart to sing with, and I look forward to every show we do together.

Several people have asked about the red strings on my sparkle strat guitar. I love the color red, and I love that my strings and guitar match my lipstick! They are DR Strings and you can find out about them here. http://www.drstrings.com/#!red-devils-list/c3q6

Billtown, Black Strat Blues, Lisa Biales nomination, my new CD is finished, and CD release parties!

Hi Everyone,

Happy Summer! Yea, it’s hot in Georgia. How is it where you are? I hope you had a good time on the 4th of July. What a great country we live in. We’re so lucky.

I had a wonderful time in Williamsport, Pennsylvania last month. Billtown Blues is one of my favorite festivals! I had a reunion with my northern band – Jeremy Jaffe, Tim Hooper, Sean Farley and Andy Seal – and they rocked it on stage at the festival. And my trip was made so much easier because of Roadie Jim Boose, and all of his hard work road managing. Thanks to all the guys!

At the festival I also got a chance to sing with a young teen band, The Black Strat Blues Company. It does my heart good to see young people playing music, especially when it’s the Blues. There are some great young players out there.

I’m proud to announce that the album Paul Hornsby and I produced this past year for Lisa Biales has been nominated for a Blues Blast Award! “Belle of the Blues” is up for Acoustic Album of the Year! We’re all so excited about it, and Lisa will be singing at the awards show. You can vote here: http://www.bluesblastmagazine.com/bbmas/vote/

And more good news! I couldn’t wait to tell you that I’m finished with the new CD! The title is “A New Day” and I can’t wait for you all to hear it. I have some CD release parties coming up, so keep an eye on my schedule. We’re adding dates all the time, and we’ve got offers coming in left and right. I hope to see YOU in your city soon!

This Friday I’m at the Museum of Art in Knoxville with my band, then next week I’m performing solo for a private corporate team building event in Hobart, Indiana. On August 2nd my band and I return for a CD release party in Tallahassee at Bradfordville Blues Club. Then my boys and I will head to Port Royal, South Carolina for a Music in the Streets concert series. And in September, I’ll be doing a duo with Lisa Biales, as the “Peach Pickin’ Mamas” at Pruis Hall at Ball State University. I’ve got lots going on and it’s all good!

Whether it’s solo, with Lisa as a duo, or with my band, I love performing on stage! And I’m so grateful to all the fans who keep buying tickets and coming to the shows. Ellen Altamore even drove all the way from Michigan to see me at Billtown in Pennsylvania! And for every one of you who buys my CD’s, and emails me and sends me messages on facebook – your thoughts and encouragement, and your sweet comments keep me going!

Don’t forget to check the Tour Dates page, and mark your calendars for these upcoming events. Then you can bring all your friends and family and get your own copy of “A New Day”. Let’s celebrate y’all!

Until I see you, keep a song in your heart!

Another great BMA show, just finished up in the studio, my new camera, Billtown this weekend!

Hello Everybody!

I just wanted to catch you up on what’s been going on with the Songbird. I attended the Blues Music Awards in Memphis and as always, I had a natural ball. I got to be part of the VizzTone jam at the Rum Boogie on Beale, and talk about a good time! It was happening there!  I got to jam with Bob Margolin, using Little G Weavil‘s amazing guitar. It was an awesome evening!

And then the next night, it was the Blues Awards night, and what an outstanding show! I’ve made so many friends by attending the Blues Awards every year and it’s always like a family reunion when we all get together. I met up with my “Peach Pickin’ Mamas” partner, Lisa Biales, and she and I did some radio spots. We did a fun interview with Jesse Finkelstein for Blues Radio International. I’ll let you know when that show will air.

Lisa’s CD is doing great and I was happy to introduce her to some of my friends in the industry. Here I am at the BMA’s with some of my favorite people – Lisa Biales, Reba Russell, and Teeny Tucker.

I’ve been working hard on my upcoming album. My band helped with the arrangements on several of the songs and played their butts off in the studio. I’m so proud of the way they put so much of themselves into these songs. The creative juices were really flowing!

Here’s my band after a session in the studio – Paul Hornsby/engineer and producer, Gary Porter/drums, Mike Harrell/piano and organ, Ken Wynn/guitar, and Johnny Fountain/bass.  I love these guys!

And here’s Gary and his wife, Rhonda Porter. They helped me with background vocals, and she’s my soul sister!

It looks like the new CD, entitled “A New Day,” will be officially released in September. But I’ll have a few CD release parties prior to the national release. There will be one in Knoxville on July 18th, one in Chattanooga on July 19th, and another in Tallahassee on August 2nd. We’re working on several more, and we’re also in the process of booking some mini-tours in other states. I may be coming to your town, so just keep an eye on my schedule to see what’s going on. We’ll post the dates as soon as they’re contracted.

This coming Sunday, I’ll be performing at the Billtown Blues Festival in Hughesville, Pennsylvania. I’ll be joined on stage by my Northern Band, some great guys I used to play with some years back. I can’t wait to see them again, and all of my friends in Pennsylvania!

The goats are doing fine and I get such comfort from them when I get stressed. Here’s Sippie and me, enjoying a moment together.

I’ve also been enjoying my new camera. Here are a couple of photos I’ve taken lately. Can you tell I’m lovin’ it?!

Well, it’s back to work on the new CD. I need to get my part of the cover finished so we can wrap this baby up!

I hope to see you along the way. Until then, keep a song in your heart!

Crimson Moon, Peach Pickin’ Mamas, BMA’s in Memphis, Billtown Festival, and playing with my goats!

Hey Everyone!

I just wanted to post a quick update, to let you know what I’ve got going on.

First, I wanted you to see how I spent the afternoon a few days ago. When I’m on the road, I miss my family. And I miss all my pets and from this picture it seems the goats miss me!  I went down to visit them when I came off the road, and look how they greeted me!

EG getting lovin from her goats 041314 rev

As most of you know, besides playing solo and with my band, I’ve also been blessed to team up with Lisa Biales as the “Peach Pickin’ Mamas,” and we just wrapped up another tour. Read all about it at http://www.PeachPickinMamas.com!

I’ll be hitting the road again this weekend, with a solo show on Saturday night at The Crimson Moon Cafe in Dahlonega. Their website states that they exist to “support the creative spirit,” and that’s so true. It’s one of my favorite venues, and I’m thrilled that I’ll be back on their stage.

I haven’t been on the road as much this year as I’d like to be, because I’m spending a lot of time in the studio working on my next album. I’m getting more and more excited about it by the day. I’ve got most of the songs recorded, and I’m working on a couple more new ones. I’ll be working hard with Paul Hornsby and my band over the next few months getting it all finished up. I can’t wait for you all to hear my new songs!!

Last week at the Eatonton Putnam Arts Foundation 2014 Photography Contest & Exhibition, I won a couple of ribbons. It seems that everybody likes my goats, because this photo, “Goats at the Gate” got one of the ribbons. You can see more of my photography at http://www.egkightphotography.com.

I’ll be in Memphis for the Blues Music Awards next month, then in June I’ll be playing at one of my all-time favorite festivals, the Billtown Blues Festival in Hughesville, Pennsylvania. Keep an eye out on my schedule as we’re working on some new dates and I may be headed your way. Until then  keep a song in your heart!

On the road again! And taking photos for Domestic Violence Prevention video!

Hey Everyone!

Last Saturday night I performed at a house concert for Mike and Marcia Adams, and let me tell you – we had an EXTRA larj time! I love doing house concerts because I’m literally just a few feet away from my audience. And what a great crowd this was! I was treated like a queen, and even had a few musicians sit in with me. The same thing happened a while back at Karen Claypool’s house concert. You never know what could happen at one of these events. It’s nothing but having a little party in your living room!

In between gigs, I’ve been doing a lot of songwriting, on some deep subjects. And one of them is a song that I started thinking about when I came home from the hospital a few years ago, after a life-threatening illness. It talks about how quickly our lives can change, and how we have to hold on…

My band has been working real hard with me on some new songs and we’ve been in the studio once already. They’re naturally tearing it up! We’ll be going back in real soon, and I can’t wait! I’m the luckiest singer on the planet, to get to work with Ken Wynn, Gary Porter, Johnny Fountain, and Mike Harrell. I’d put them up against any band out there!

I hope to see you all soon in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Marietta and Douglas, Georgia. I’m doing a solo and a couple of band shows, so you know I’ll be having a ball! I always enjoy being with my friends at the Tropicana Room in Chattanooga, and I haven’t been to Darwin’s in Marietta in a long time. It’ll be good to be back on their stage. And the boys and I are gonna let it fly at the Bikes, Blues & BBQ Festival in Douglas. Bring your friends and come on out to see us!

Last week I took photos of Kim Kight, my cousin who was the victim of domestic violence a few years ago. These pictures will be part of a video for the group Break the Silence against Domestic Violence, which should be seen nationally before long. Kim will be speaking, telling her story of survival, at an event in Atlanta on March 8th. Here’s a video that tells more about it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDqn9wErS9M&feature=youtu.be.

Thanks for checking in with me on my blog, and for always supporting my music and my photography.

I can’t wait for you to hear the new songs! I’ll keep you posted on how the new album’s coming along.

Here’s my latest photo of me and Sweetie, taken on Valentine’s Day.
